Every time I do a learning activity with my almost 4-year-old daughter I’ve noticed lately that my 1 ½ year old daughter has been feeling a little left out. She starts whining and she certainly doesn’t want to help with her sister’s activity anymore. So, I decided it was about time Madelyn (my 1 ½ year old) got to do her own fun learning activity!
At this age she has a good vocabulary, can count to 5, and is starting to learn her colors. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner I figured I could whip up a little Valentine’s Day color matching activity for her. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go but I was willing to try and to tell you the truth I was surprisingly happy with the results. Madelyn was also very happy and my 4-year-old was so excited to help teach her little sister all about color matching. It was defiantly a win for everyone.
Ok, I know you’re excited to get started! So, here we go…………………………..
Materials
- Valentine’s Day Color Matching Activity Printable
- Laminating machine (I laminated this activity to make it more durable and so that we could use it again)
- Lamination
Directions: First, you will want to print out the Valentine’s Day Color Matching Activity Printable. Then cut out the colored hearts that do not have the color words on them. After that I laminated the mat and hearts so that we could do this activity again. Laminating it is optional. I put the color matching mat on the floor first and my 4-year-old daughter told my younger daughter the colors. Then I gave Madelyn the hearts I had cut out. I showed her how to match the hearts to the correct color and then let her try one on her own. After a few times she started to understand and matched all the colors.
How did my daughter do with this activity
I thought Madelyn did great on this activity! My expectations were not that high considering this was her very first real learning activity. I took just a few times showing her how to match the color for her to get it. She actually liked it so much we played it 3 times!
What is she learning during this activity
- color recognition
- matching
- object classification
- following directions
- hand eye coordination
My daughter LOVED this activity and it was a great way to start helping her learn her colors. Have your toddler do this Valentine’s Day Color Matching Activity and they’ll learn to love color matching too!
